Title: Angel of Winter
Fandom: Dragons (Original)
Pairings: Aarni/Otso (Raymond/Adrian)
Rating: PG
Summary: Otso is again spending the Christmas with Aarni's family. However, he is somewhat distracted from the practical matters by one very beautiful dragon.
"You know, I didn't even know you had a cottage." Otso held the door open while Aarni stepped out, then shut it firmly after them, his other hand holding the lantern high.
"Well, technically, we only have half of one," Aarni pointed out, walking on ahead through the freshly fallen snow. "Raymond owns the place in half with this werewolf couple he knows. They spend much of their summers here, since the woods have a lot of prey then, but in the winter it's usually so snowy that what little prey they could catch is really not worth the trouble. We like to come here in winter when Raymond has the time, because it's so far from any cities and towns, but in the summer it's far too light for us."
"Makes sense, I guess." Otso glanced around. The area between the main cottage and the smaller building with the sauna had been snowed in, even the paths they had shovelled just earlier in the day having disappeared completely. "How come you were in town last Christmas when I stayed with you, then?"
"Well, that was because of you." Aarni glanced at him over his shoulder. "Since you were only staying with us for half of the break, Raymond thought it wouldn't have made much sense to drag you over here for the sake of a few days, so we stayed in town for the first half and then came here for New Year's when you went to stay with Ansa's folks."
"Ah." Suddenly, he felt somewhat embarrassed. He'd never realised he was causing such trouble. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. It's not like you asked us to change our plans." Flakes of snow landed in Aarni's uncovered head, disappearing immediately into the white hair. "Besides, both have their pros and cons. I quite like the darkness and silence around here, but back in the house we have a shower and electric heating."
Otso chuckled. "I suppose that's true." He was careful to follow along in Aarni's steps, tracing their path through the snow. "Though I still feel like I'm just being trouble."
"Don't be ridiculous. It's not like Raymond's shy about making you do your own share of the chores, as evident." Aarni glanced back at him again, a smirk on his face. "Usually it's my duty alone to get the sauna warm. At least you can help me with that."
"Because obviously you make me work so hard." He turned the knob on the lantern he carried, making the light brighter. "You sure you don't want the light, walking ahead?"
Aarni actually laughed at that. "Shadow dragon, darling, remember? We didn't even have any light for the sauna before; I had Raymond buy the lantern for your benefit."
"Ah. Right." He really was an idiot, wasn't he?
"Boohoo, you think like a human. Obviously you don't truly love me or somesuch." They reached the smaller building, with Aarni pulling the door sharply open. "Come on, let's get in before we drop any body parts."
Otso could have protested that it wasn't really that cold, and besides the walk wasn't that long, but then he was quite happy to get indoors nevertheless. Brushing snow off his shoulders, he then opened his coat, sliding it off on the bench of the small dressing room. "Mmm, nice and cozy." Sure, it was still actually pretty cold, but compared with the outside it was bliss.
"Enjoy it while you can." Aarni grinned as he did the same. "I'll admit, sometimes I just stay here while it's getting warm, but at this point it's a bit too hot to stay around too long." He paused. "Well, dressed, anyway."
"I guess." Otso chuckled, setting the lantern on the table before following Aarni to the actual bathroom. The heat struck him on the threshold, a soft, smothering blanket that melted away the last bits of cold that still remained from their trek outside. "Wow, it really is hot in here."
"Well, that's kind of the point, isn't it?" Aarni opened the fireplace, the dim light in the room suddenly getting much brighter as the flames struck out. "And we're just in time to add wood, I see."
"Looks like there's enough water, at least," Otso added, checking the containers while Aarni fed the fire. "Good. I'd hate to have to carry any more in that weather."
"Lucky us." Aarni grinned. "Though if Adrian chooses to wash hir hair, it's all going to disappear fast."
"Eh. We'll make do somehow." Otso paused, looking at Aarni's silhouette in front of the fire. The glow of the fire was surrounding the white hair with tones of gold and red, a glowing halo in the flickering light of the room. The snow from earlier had melted, falling in small rivulets along the sides of Aarni's head, a couple of the drops capturing a spark of light before sliding out of view. Then he closed the door, the glow of the fire muted through the soot-covered glass, and it almost seemed the outline of Aarni's body was starting to bleed into the shadows in the corners, fading out of sight.
"Otso?" He realised that Aarni had been saying something that he had missed completely. "You still here?"
"Right. Sorry." He swallowed. "I was just… in my thoughts."
"Really?" Aarni looked at him, and Otso could have sworn the black eyes were glowing in the semi-darkness. "I was afraid you'd fallen asleep." He stood up from where he'd been crouching in front of the fire. "Come on, let's get back inside. We've got enough time to catch some kind of a snack before we have to come back again."
"Sounds good." He followed Aarni out of the bathroom again, greeted by the light of the lantern in the dressing room. "Assuming Raymond won't get mad at us for ruining out appetites before dinner, that is. He seems to be pretty set on that."
"Eh, we're adults. I'd think we can judge our own appetite." Aarni shrugged as he pulled his coat on again, waiting for Otso to do the same and grab the lantern before opening the door outside. "Besides, I think he's expecting a guest around now. He'll be distracted enough."
"Oh?" Otso raised his eyebrows as he again paused to close the door behind them. "Who'd come all the way here in this weather?"
"Oh, the guy he's expecting doesn't take the road." Aarni suddenly grasped his hand, his fingers already cold though they had just stepped outside. Otso found himself taking a tight hold as though he were trying to wish warmth into the pale hands. "Come on. You ever met an angel before?"
Letting himself be pulled along, Otso wanted to say he had certainly seen one right in front of him.
